Collingwood captain Darcy Moore emphasized that Jamie Elliott’s health is the top priority as the star forward grapples with a vascular issue that will keep him sidelined for at least another six weeks.
Elliott has been out since round eight due to the problem in his foot, which the Magpies report is nearly resolved. The 31-year-old is expected to begin outdoor training with the club’s rehabilitation group this week but could still be two months away from returning to the team.
“Jamie’s dealing with an injury concern at the moment and taking a bit of time to recover,” Moore said on Wednesday. “His health is paramount and comes first. Once he’s done with that phase, he’ll look to get back out on the field. We just wish him all the best, but his health is definitely paramount right now.”
Collingwood, currently ninth on the ladder, is also managing a significant injury list ahead of their King’s Birthday clash against Melbourne. Forwards Brody Mihocek (hamstring), Mason Cox (knee/concussion), Joe Richards (foot), and Dan McStay (knee – season) are sidelined, though Will Hoskin-Elliott (hamstring) and Reef McInnes (concussion) could return.
The midfield is also depleted with Jordan De Goey (groin), Tom Mitchell (foot), and Scott Pendlebury (bicep) out of action. To cope, regular defenders Jeremy Howe and Billy Frampton have been playing in attack, and Ash Johnson was recalled for the recent match against the Western Bulldogs.
Moore, a dual All-Australian defender, dismissed suggestions he might switch back to a forward role, noting the team has “plenty of options” and it’s “exciting” for fans to see different lineups.
One potential change could be the recall of versatile tall Nathan Kreuger, who impressed by kicking three goals in the VFL last week. Kreuger has been limited by injuries but may now be poised for a return.
“He’s had some injury concerns earlier in the season but has been back on the field recently and really took advantage last weekend,” Moore said. “With some key forwards and tall personnel out, there are definitely opportunities there. Bringing someone like him in is something we’ll look at for sure.”
