In a decisive move to solidify their receiving corps, the Houston Texans have signed wide receiver Nico Collins to a substantial three-year contract extension. This deal, first reported by The Athletic’s Diana Russini, highlights Houston’s commitment to one of its breakout stars from the 2023 season.
The extension is valued at up to $72.75 million, with $52 million guaranteed, making Collins one of the ten highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL. His average annual salary of nearly $24.2 million places him seventh among his peers, just ahead of the Seattle Seahawks’ DK Metcalf and behind the Philadelphia Eagles’ A.J. Brown, the league’s highest-paid receiver.
Collins’ performance in 2023 was a major factor in this lucrative deal. He posted career highs across the board with 80 receptions for 1,297 yards and eight touchdowns, narrowly missing his first Pro Bowl selection. This stellar season came after a relatively modest start to his career, where he recorded 70 catches for 927 yards and three touchdowns over his first two seasons.
Texans General Manager Nick Caserio had hinted at these negotiations earlier, expressing a desire to retain Collins long-term. Talks with Collins’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, known for representing top-tier talent, culminated in an agreement that benefits both parties.
This extension not only secures Collins through the 2027 season but also raises questions about the future of another significant offseason acquisition, Stefon Diggs. Collins’ contract and his rising star power will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the Texans’ offensive strategy moving forward.
