The Philadelphia Phillies have placed infielder Alec Bohm on the 90-day injured list due to a left hamstring injury. Bohm missed Sunday’s game against Atlanta because of hamstring tightness and returned to the lineup on Tuesday against the Mets, only to aggravate the injury while making a defensive play at third base.
“Very mild, but we want to take care of it and knock it out,” said Phillies manager Rob Thomson. “He had the two days off and we thought we had knocked it out.”
Bohm, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 draft, has been an essential part of the Phillies’ lineup, batting .265 with six home runs and 37 RBI in 53 games this season. His absence will be felt as the team navigates through the season.
To fill the void, the Phillies have promoted infielder Drew Ellis from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Ellis, 27, last played in the majors in 2022 with the Diamondbacks and Mariners. He has been impressive in the minors this season, hitting .269 with a 1.009 OPS, eight home runs, and 27 RBI in 21 games across two minor league levels.
Manager Rob Thomson announced that Edmundo Sosa will take over at third base in Bohm’s absence. Additionally, Kody Clemens will play first base against right-handed pitchers, while Ellis will start at first base against left-handed pitchers.
The Phillies are set to face the Mets in a Thursday matinee, with the Mets having won the first two games of the series. The team hopes that the adjustments and contributions from the new lineup will help them stay competitive during Bohm’s recovery.
