Greg Scruggs, a former member of the Michigan Wolverines football coaching staff, has been sentenced to 12 months of probation following his arrest in March for operating a motor vehicle while visibly impaired. The sentence was handed down on Wednesday in Washtenaw County’s 15th District Court.
Scruggs, who had served as the defensive line coach for the Wolverines, resigned from his position on March 21, shortly after his arrest in Ann Arbor. He appeared in court via electronic video, accompanied by his Marysville-based attorney, Gerrow “Jerry” Mason, who also appeared remotely.
The arrest took place in Ann Arbor, where Scruggs was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence. The charge of visibly impaired operation indicates that, although Scruggs may not have been over the legal blood alcohol limit, his ability to drive was noticeably impaired.
Scruggs’ probation terms include mandatory participation in a substance abuse education program, regular check-ins with a probation officer, and adherence to any additional conditions set forth by the court. Failure to comply with these terms could result in further legal consequences.
Scruggs’ departure from the Michigan football program marks a significant change for the team, which had benefited from his expertise and leadership on the defensive line. Despite the circumstances, the Wolverines are moving forward, focusing on the upcoming season and maintaining their commitment to excellence both on and off the field.
This incident serves as a reminder of the serious consequences of impaired driving and the importance of making responsible decisions. The Michigan football community, while saddened by the events, continues to support Scruggs in his efforts to move forward and make positive changes in his life.
