The 2023-24 Kansas basketball team faced a significant challenge with their 3-point shooting, hitting only 33.2% from beyond the arc, marking the lowest percentage in the Bill Self era. They also ranked in the bottom 10th percentile of the NCAA for threes made per game, averaging just 5.7.
To address this issue, they’ve brought in Zeke Mayo, a transfer from South Dakota State and Lawrence native, known for his impressive 38.8% 3-point shooting throughout his collegiate career. However, with Kevin McCullar graduating and Johnny Furphy likely heading to the draft, KU is losing nearly half of its long-range production.
Coach Self has been actively seeking guards with shooting abilities since the season’s end, and one standout prospect they’ve reached out to is Koby Brea, a top-tier 3-and-D wing. Sources indicate Kansas’ keen interest in Brea, who led the NCAA last season with a remarkable 49.8% accuracy from beyond the arc. Despite starting only four games for Dayton, he managed to sink 100 of his 201 attempted threes, averaging 11.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game.
Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 175 pounds, Brea’s shooting prowess extends to all areas of the court, notably shooting an impressive 55% on corner threes. As a graduate transfer, he’s garnered interest from numerous schools, but Kansas is making strides in securing his commitment. While also pursuing guards Rylan Griffen and AJ Storr, adding Brea to their roster could significantly bolster their shooting lineup.
Brea’s exceptional shooting abilities make him a player of interest for Jayhawk fans, particularly as he could thrive as a valuable bench player for KU, bringing much-needed scoring efficiency to the team.
