According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Minnesota Vikings are adding experienced tight end Robert Tonyan to their roster. At 30 years old, Tonyan enters his seventh NFL season, having previously played for two other NFC North teams. While the specifics of the agreement remain undisclosed, Tonyan’s signing adds depth to the Vikings’ tight end corps.
Undrafted initially, Tonyan found his footing primarily with the Green Bay Packers after joining them late in the 2017 season. Although he saw limited action in 2018 and 2019, Tonyan’s breakout year came in 2020, where he showcased his abilities with 52 receptions, 586 yards, and an impressive 11 touchdowns, all without missing a game. He continued his strong performance into the playoffs, contributing significantly to the Packers’ postseason campaign. Despite facing an ACL injury during the 2021 season, Tonyan demonstrated resilience by returning to the field for all 17 games in 2022 and 2023.
In the previous season, Tonyan donned the jersey of the Chicago Bears, serving primarily as a secondary tight end. Despite starting six games, his statistical output was modest with 11 receptions for 112 yards and no touchdowns, marking a departure from his usual scoring prowess.
With the opportunity for increased playing time early in the season, Tonyan’s arrival comes at a crucial juncture for the Vikings. Starting tight end TJ Hockenson’s injury last December, which included a torn ACL and MCL, is likely to sideline him at the season’s onset. Alongside Tonyan, the Vikings’ tight end roster features Josh Oliver, Johnny Mundt, and Nick Muse, offering Tonyan ample opportunities to contribute on the field.
Having started in 24 of his 85 NFL appearances, Tonyan boasts an impressive tally of 17 touchdowns and an average of over 10 yards per reception, underscoring his value as a formidable offensive asset. Despite his undrafted status from an FCS school, Tonyan has proven himself as a reliable and productive player in the league, and his addition to the Vikings’ roster adds depth and experience to their tight end position.
