Former Canterbury Bulldogs and Wests Tigers playmaker Brandon Wakeham reportedly faces drug supply charges as part of a significant police investigation. Currently contracted with the Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles, affiliated with the Manly Sea Eagles, Wakeham’s arrest was first reported by The Sydney Morning Herald. With 40 NRL appearances since his 2019 debut, Wakeham, known for his role in the halves, has also represented Fiji on the international stage.
This incident marks the second drug-related controversy involving an NRL player in recent weeks, following Braydon Trindall’s charges. Trindall may return to play after being named in Cronulla Sharks’ squad for the Magic Round clash against the Sydney Roosters.
According to NSW Police, Wakeham and two others were charged for alleged prohibited drug supply under Strike Force Verbena. The investigation, conducted jointly by the Drug and Firearms Squad, Australian Federal Police, and NSW Crime Commission, led to Wakeham’s arrest. He faces charges including participating in a criminal group and drug supply offenses.
Wakeham is set to appear in court following his night in custody. Police reportedly seized MDMA and cocaine during the investigation. Despite his listing in the Manly Sea Eagles’ extended bench and inclusion in the Blacktown Workers’ NSW Cup team, Wakeham’s legal situation casts doubt on his immediate playing future.
