Virginia Tech and Coach Mike Young secured a commitment from Duke guard Jaden Schutt over the weekend, marking the Hokies’ fifth transfer portal acquisition this offseason. Schutt joins a roster bolstered by Temple guard Hysier Miller, Cal guard Rodney Brown Jr., Charleston forward Ben Burnham, and VCU forward Toibu Lawal. With Schutt’s arrival, Virginia Tech’s total additions for the upcoming season stand at eight, including high school talents guard Ben Hammond and forwards Ryan Jones Jr. and Tyler Johnson.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 190 pounds, the redshirt sophomore spent two seasons with the Blue Devils. During his freshman year in 2022-23, Schutt appeared in 14 games, averaging 2.1 points while showcasing his prowess from beyond the arc, sinking seven of his 20 attempts. However, his sophomore campaign was interrupted by a left knee injury that led to surgery after an exhibition game against UNC Pembroke in November 2023.
Hailing from Yorkville, Ill., Schutt was highly regarded as a four-star recruit and a top-75 prospect in the class of 2022. His impressive high school career at Yorkville Christian High School attracted offers from notable programs such as Creighton, Florida, Michigan State, and Wisconsin, among others. Upon entering the transfer portal on April 15, Schutt garnered interest from several schools, including Butler, Dayton, and Notre Dame.
As the 2022 Gatorade Player of the Year in Illinois, Schutt showcased his scoring ability, averaging 24.6 points and 6.3 rebounds while leading his team to a state title. Duke coach Jon Scheyer praised Schutt’s shooting prowess and championship pedigree upon his signing with the Blue Devils in November 2021, qualities that align well with Coach Young’s emphasis on perimeter shooting at Virginia Tech.
With Schutt’s addition, Virginia Tech’s roster for the 2024-25 season now comprises 12 scholarship players, leaving one spot open for further additions or adjustments.
