Zack Short, Former Detroit Tigers Infielder, Finds New Home with Atlanta Braves in 2024 Shuffle. In a whirlwind of trades and transitions, Zack Short, once donning the Detroit Tigers uniform, now prepares for his third stint in Major League Baseball with the Atlanta Braves.
Following his designation for assignment by the Boston Red Sox earlier this week, Short has been traded to the Braves in exchange for cash considerations, marking another chapter in his journey through the league.
The 29-year-old infielder’s odyssey began last November when he was claimed off waivers by the New York Mets after the Tigers dropped him from their roster at the close of the 2023 season. Despite a promising start with the Mets’ Opening Day roster, Short found limited playing time, making only three starts and batting 1-for-9 before being designated for assignment two weeks ago.
Briefly landing with the Red Sox thereafter, Short’s tenure in Boston proved short-lived, going hitless in seven at-bats across two games.
Now, as he joins the Braves, Short steps into the utility role vacated by Luis Guillorme, recently traded to the Los Angeles Angels. While expectations for playing time may be tempered, Short’s versatility and experience could prove valuable to his new team.
Short’s journey in the majors traces back to the Detroit Tigers, who acquired him from the Chicago Cubs in a 2020 trade involving outfielder Cameron Maybin. Over his time in Detroit, Short showcased his utility prowess, appearing in various infield positions while also logging innings as a pitcher in lopsided matchups.
In the 2023 season, Short amassed a .204 batting average with a .603 OPS (73 OPS+) across 253 plate appearances spread over 110 games. Known for his defensive acumen and adaptability, Short’s contributions often extended beyond the batter’s box, solidifying his role as a reliable asset for any team.
