The Jacksonville Jaguars made roster moves on Tuesday, parting ways with wide receiver Zay Jones and kicker Joey Slye. Their releases come shortly after the Jaguars selected new players at their positions in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Jones, 29, had a productive stint with the Jaguars, amassing 34 catches for 321 yards and two touchdowns in nine games last season. However, injuries sidelined him for eight games, impacting his performance. The veteran receiver, who joined the Jaguars in 2022 on a three-year, $24 million deal, restructured his contract in 2023. His release frees up $4.1 million in salary cap space for the team.
Slye, 28, struggled with accuracy, posting a field goal percentage of 79.2% last season with the Washington Commanders. Despite making 32 of 35 extra-point attempts, his performance fell short of expectations. Slye signed a one-year deal with the Jaguars last month, but the team opted to move on.
The Jaguars bolstered their receiving corps by drafting Brian Thomas Jr. from LSU with the No. 23 overall pick. They also added Arkansas kicker Cam Little in the sixth round. Additionally, the team signed undrafted free agent wide receivers to add depth to the roster.
With Gabe Davis, Brian Thomas Jr., and Christian Kirk leading the receiving unit, the Jaguars aim to strengthen their offensive firepower for the upcoming season.
