During his tenure as a Duke basketball standout, JJ Redick faced widespread disdain across America. Despite the animosity, he evolved into one of the Blue Devils’ finest, ultimately embarking on a 15-year NBA journey before retiring after the 2020-21 season.
Yet, the public sentiment toward Redick has undergone a significant transformation post-retirement. Once reviled, he’s now gaining prominence in the basketball realm. However, his trajectory may not have reached its peak.
Recent reports from The Athletic’s Shams Charania suggest that Redick is in contention for the head coaching position with the Charlotte Hornets. While coaching has been a publicly expressed interest for the 39-year-old, his experience is limited to his son’s AAU team, as he candidly admitted on his podcast.
Should Redick land the coaching role, he would inherit a team featuring several fellow Duke alumni. Mark Williams, Seth Curry, and Marques Bolden are among the Hornets’ ranks, forming a compelling connection known as “The Brotherhood.”
The seriousness of Redick’s candidacy remains uncertain. Nevertheless, his potential ascension could see another former Blue Devil joining the NBA coaching ranks, alongside the likes of Quin Snyder of the Atlanta Hawks.
