David Quinn was axed by the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday, ending his two-season tenure with the team. The Sharks, who finished dead last in the NHL this season with a meager 47 points and a .287 points percentage, struggled under Quinn’s leadership. Their woes included a lack of consecutive wins and a dismal -150 goal differential.
Sharks General Manager Mike Grier expressed gratitude for Quinn’s efforts but emphasized the need for change, citing the team’s direction. Quinn’s record with the Sharks stood at 41-98-25 over 164 games.
This marks the 16th coaching shake-up in the NHL since last season’s end, highlighting a trend of turnover behind the benches. Quinn, who previously coached the Rangers, faced a similar fate after a brief stint leading a young, rebuilding team. Despite this, his impact on nurturing talent like Adam Fox and Filip Chytil in New York remains notable.
Before his NHL tenure, Quinn spent five seasons coaching at his alma mater, Boston University.
