Maple Leafs Reportedly Sign Defensive Prospect Cade Webber
The Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly inked a deal with defensive prospect Cade Webber, as per a report by Athletic writer Joe Smith. While specific contract details remain undisclosed, it is confirmed to be an entry-level agreement. Webber’s rights were acquired by the Maple Leafs from the Carolina Hurricanes during the trade deadline, in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick.
At 23 years old, Webber recently completed his fourth season at Boston University, where his team fell short in the Frozen Four semifinals against Denver in a 2-1 overtime match. Despite tallying only six assists in 38 games this season, Webber’s defensive prowess earned him recognition as the Best Defensive Defenceman in Hockey East. Throughout his collegiate career, he accumulated 16 points in 123 games.
Cade Webber is signing with @MapleLeafs. Told me he plans to arrive Sunday and join for next road trip. @TerrierHockey.

According to Steven Ellis, Daily Faceoff’s prospect analyst, Webber’s strengths lie in defensive play rather than offense. He is expected to excel in penalty killing and neutralizing opponents’ top players, leveraging his size and defensive instincts. Drafted by the Hurricanes in the fourth round of the 2019 NHL Draft, Webber transitioned to Boston University after a season with the Penticton Vees in the BCHL.
While it’s unlikely that Webber will immediately join the NHL roster, he is anticipated to start his professional career with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL. The Marlies, currently ranked fourth in the North Division, are vying for a playoff spot. Webber will bolster a defensive lineup that includes prospects like Topi Niemela, William Villeneuve, and Mikko Kokkonen, alongside experienced players such as Max Lajoie, Marshall Rifai, and Cameron Gaunce.
