“Dolphins Close to Securing Third Wide Receiver – Guess Who?”

April 10, 2024

The Miami Dolphins showcased a high-octane offense in 2023, leading in multiple statistical categories such as yards per game and yards per carry. Despite their explosive performance, there’s a noticeable gap in the lineup, particularly in the WR3 position, or the third wide receiver, commonly the slot receiver.

This WR3 role is pivotal, often requiring a reliable receiver capable of making tough catches, especially over the middle in critical moments. In the previous season, Trent Sherfield filled this role, alongside Mike Gesicki, who provided a tall, reliable option.

However, in 2023, the Dolphins lacked a distinct WR3, relying heavily on their top receivers, Hill and Waddle. While players like Braxton Berrios and Cedrick Wilson were dependable, they didn’t offer a different dimension to the passing game.

This absence is notable, especially when the top receivers are small and agile. To balance the offense, a contrasting receiver is essential, particularly for challenging late-season games.

The Dolphins attempted to address this issue by acquiring Chase Claypool during the 2023 season. Claypool, known for his imposing stature and ability to make tough catches, seemed promising initially. However, a crucial mistake in a pivotal game led to limited playing time, ultimately leaving him as a free agent attracting interest from the CFL.
