The Wisconsin Badgers’ NCAA Tournament journey was cut short with a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss to defending champs Quinnipiac. Despite a strong comeback and nearly scoring the winning goal, the Badgers fell short in Providence.
After a 19-day break, questions loomed about the team’s readiness, especially as Quinnipiac took an early lead. Although Wisconsin fought back with two quick goals, Quinnipiac leveled the score by the end of the period. The game went into overtime, where Quinnipiac secured victory soon after Wisconsin killed off a penalty.
Freshman William Whitelaw came close to clinching victory for the Badgers, but Quinnipiac’s goalie denied him at the last moment. Despite a spirited effort, the Badgers struggled to match Quinnipiac’s energy, managing only 20 shots in nearly 71 minutes of play.
Following the defeat, five Badgers entered the transfer portal, including seniors Luke LaMaster and Samuel Stange, freshman Brady Cleveland, and forwards Charlie Stramel and William Whitelaw. Whitelaw, in particular, showed promise with ten goals and seven assists in his freshman season.
Additionally, senior David Silye opted to forego his final year of eligibility for a professional contract. However, the Badgers have already made early additions for next season, welcoming forwards Ryland Mosley and Kyle Kukkonen from Michigan Tech. Mosley, with 18 goals and 15 assists last season, joins for his final year, while Kukkonen has two years remaining. Coach Mike Hastings and his team are keeping a close eye on the transfer portal as they aim to strengthen the roster during the offseason.
