Former Miami Dolphins linebacker Mike Kolen has passed away at the age of 76.
Kolen, affectionately known as “Captain Crunch” during his collegiate years at Auburn University, was celebrated not only for his prowess on the football field but also for his character off it.
Reflecting on Kolen’s legacy, former Auburn athletic director David Housel remarked, “Mike Kolen is one of the finest men I’ve ever known.” Housel emphasized Kolen’s qualities of toughness, competitiveness, and inherent goodness, highlighting his contributions both as a football player and as a person.
During his time at Auburn, Kolen earned recognition as a two-time All-SEC selection and was named a second-team All-American in 1969. His exceptional talent led him to be drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the 12th round of the 1970 NFL draft.
As a member of the Dolphins, Kolen played a pivotal role in the team’s historic achievements, including their undefeated season in 1972, culminating in a Super Bowl victory. He continued to be an integral part of the team’s success, contributing to another Super Bowl triumph in 1973.
