Toronto extends win streak with 3-0 shutout victory over Buffalo; Matthews scores 60th goal of season

After a setback against the New Jersey Devils, the Toronto Maple Leafs bounced back with a commanding 3-0 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, March 30th. Ilya Samsonov showcased his goaltending prowess, recording his third shutout of the season with an impressive 34 saves.

Auston Matthews continued his stellar season by reaching the 60-goal mark for the second time in his NHL career. His remarkable achievement adds to his legacy as one of the league’s top goal scorers, with his previous 60-goal season occurring in the 2021-22 campaign.

John Tavares opened the scoring for the Maple Leafs with his 24th goal of the season, giving Toronto a 1-0 lead in the first period. Nicholas Robertson extended the lead to 2-0 early in the second period with his 11th goal of the season.

Matthews sealed the victory late in the third period with a spectacular goal, further solidifying his place among NHL greats. Reflecting on his milestone, Matthews expressed gratitude for the support of the fans and emphasized the importance of teamwork in achieving individual success.

In addition to the notable performances on the ice, milestones were reached off the ice as well. Tavares celebrated his 1,100th NHL career game, while T.J. Brodie reached the milestone of 900 NHL career games. Matthews joined elite company in NHL history, becoming the ninth player with two or more 60-goal seasons.

Despite the loss, Buffalo’s Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen put on a strong performance with 19 saves. The game marked the end of Alex Tuch’s seven-game point streak and JJ Peterka’s four-game goal streak.

As the Maple Leafs look to maintain their momentum, they prepare to face the Florida Panthers in their upcoming matchup, aiming to extend their win streak and solidify their position in the standings.
