The Green Bay Packers boast several former players who have transitioned into roles as assistant coaches, media figures, or athletic trainers within the league. However, one ex-player has recently received a significant promotion.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Twitter, Harris has been elevated to the position of assistant head coach and defensive backs coach. The 49-year-old Harris previously oversaw the defensive backs for the Dallas Cowboys starting in 2020, where he played a key role in developing players like Trevon Diggs and Da’Ron Bland. Harris and McCarthy had previously collaborated during McCarthy’s early years as an NFL head coach, working together with the Packers from 2006 to 2010. Their partnership will continue as they focus on further refining the Cowboys’ formidable secondary.
Following Dan Quinn’s departure for a head coaching role with the Washington Commanders, the Cowboys will lean heavily on their secondary to generate turnovers under a new defensive coordinator. The team’s defensive backs are expected to face significant challenges under the guidance of veteran coach Mike Zimmer and his quarters coverage scheme.
