McDavid and MacKinnon Rewrite NHL Records: A Season of Streaks and Surpassing Legends

March 27, 2024

Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon continue to rewrite NHL records as they ascend the ranks of hockey history over the past five years. Each season sees them edging closer to legendary status, and this year, they achieved a rare feat: becoming only the fourth pair of players in NHL history to maintain home-point streaks of over 25 games.

Currently ranked second and third in the NHL scoring race, respectively, MacKinnon and McDavid are making waves. MacKinnon has extended his remarkable point streak to 34 consecutive home games, trailing Wayne Gretzky’s record by just six games. This season has seen MacKinnon reach new heights, surpassing his career highs in all statistical categories. As the driving force behind the Colorado Avalanche, he leads his team in points, goals, and assists, propelling them to fourth place in the NHL standings. Throughout his historic home-point streak, MacKinnon has accumulated an impressive 74 points, never failing to register a point at home. Notably, he boasts an average of 2.17 points per game in home matchups.

Meanwhile, McDavid also boasts an impressive home-point streak, extending it to 26 games before its conclusion against the Colorado Avalanche on March 16th. His streak ranks him ninth for the longest point streak at home in NHL history. During this streak, McDavid amassed 62 points in 26 games, averaging 2.38 points per game at home. Additionally, McDavid has surpassed his career high for assists this season and is on track to achieve 109 assists and 140 points, still 13 points behind his career-high of 153 points in a season.

To put their achievements into perspective, in 2015, Jamie Benn won the Art Ross Trophy with 87 points for the season, while McDavid’s 91 assists alone would secure him the trophy. McDavid’s reputation as a ‘generational talent’ is well-earned. For the first time in 34 years, the NHL sees two separate players maintaining 25+ game home-point streaks. Both Canadian-born players have had stellar careers and an exceptional season. Together, McDavid and MacKinnon have tallied an astonishing 70 goals, 169 assists, and an incredible 239 points this season. The sky’s the limit for these two extraordinary athletes as the season progresses.
