The Montana State women’s basketball team secured a 51-46 victory over Idaho on Saturday at ICCU Arena, building a commanding 20-4 lead in the early stages. This marked the Bobcats’ third road win in 11 attempts this season and their first instance of consecutive road victories, following their 62-61 triumph against Eastern Washington on Thursday.
Montana State dominated the opening quarter with an 18-2 run, featuring contributions from six different players, including six points from fifth-year guard Madison Hall. The Bobcats maintained a 20-8 lead, shooting an impressive 56.3% from the field in the first quarter and enjoying a 30-17 advantage at halftime.
Reflecting on the game, MSU head coach Tricia Binford acknowledged the importance of the strong start, especially considering Idaho’s comeback attempt against Montana on Thursday. Binford emphasized the need to stay focused and praised her team for hitting crucial shots while getting the ball into the hands of experienced players down the stretch.
Although Montana State faced offensive challenges in the third quarter, shooting 2 of 10 from the field, their 6 of 9 performance at the free-throw line helped them maintain a 15-point lead heading into the final minute of the period. Despite Idaho narrowing the gap to 40-30, the Bobcats held their ground.
The Vandals initiated a comeback in the fourth quarter, with Asha Phillips scoring nine consecutive points, including two 3-pointers, cutting MSU’s lead to one. However, Madison Hall’s critical 3-pointer, followed by a contested layup, proved pivotal in securing the victory for the Bobcats. Taylor Janssen’s basket in the paint and Natalie Picton’s steal and layup further solidified MSU’s win.
Coach Binford commended her team’s resilience, characterizing them as gritty and hardworking. With the sweep of Idaho and Eastern Washington, Montana State moves into third place in the Big Sky standings, trailing league-leading Northern Arizona by 1.5 games. The Bobcats will host Northern Colorado on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
